Vi-Ability seeks a new Chief Executive who will lead the social enterprise in its mission to equip
young people with business and employment skills to address youth unemployment in the UK,
whilst also transforming struggling community sports clubs into viable businesses and thriving
community hubs.
As Chief Executive you will lead the development of an exciting new phase, overseeing a
programme that will increase the scale of our operations and impact across the UK, improving
lives and strengthening communities.
One of the UK’s leading social enterprises, Vi-Ability’s multi-award winning approach gives
young people readily transferable skills and real workplace experience. It was named UK Social
Enterprise of the Year in 2015 and has been commended by the UK Prime Minister for its work.
Vi-Ability has consistently helped 75% of those who enter its programmes into sustainable
employment.
As first in command, you will be responsible for setting a new strategic direction for Vi-Ability as
well as ensuring its smooth day-to-day running, ensuring that we provide programmes of the
highest quality, alongside consistent learning experiences for young people across the UK. The
position will require you to develop and support the team of 10 staff members who are spread
across both the Wales, London and Ireland hubs.

Reports to:
Board of Trustees and Chairperson
Key objectives:

  • To lead, in conjunction with the Board, the development of the new Vi-Ability
    strategy;
  • To build relationships with and communicate effectively with investors, employees,
    Government authorities, other stakeholders and the public;
  • To lead and oversee the implementation of Vi-Ability long and short term plans in
    accordance with its strategy;
  • To Develop PR and market opportunities, to increase the publics’ awareness of Vi-
    Ability and its ability to help young people enter employment, training or
    volunteering;
  • To ensure Vi-Ability is appropriately organised and staffed across the three locations
    in Wales, Ireland and London, and to have the authority to review the staffing
    structure to meet future needs;
  • To ensure financial stability, and that expenditures of Vi-Ability are within the
    authorised annual budget;
  • To assess the principal risks of Vi-Ability and to ensure that these risks are being
    monitored and managed;
  • To ensure effective internal controls and management information systems are in
    place;
  • To ensure that Vi-Ability has appropriate systems to enable it to conduct its activities
    both lawfully and ethically.

Person Specification:
Education and Qualification

  • Degree educated; MBA preferred.

Skills and Abilities

  • Excellent people skills to motivate a team of staff to grow Vi-Ability.
  • Entrepreneurial and excellent organisational skills.
  • Able to implement as well as design change. Ability to build effective working relationships with others, including outside the Social Enterprise.
  • Ability to set targets, delegate and monitor performance. Comfortable speaking in,public and dealing with the media.
  • Able to develop a culture that promotes enterprise, equality and values diversity.

Experience

  • At least 5 years’ experience in a management position with budgetary and people
    responsibility.
  • Proven experience in strategic business planning.
  • Proven record of accomplishment in growing an organisation, in either a commercial company or a social enterprise.
  • Proven record of accomplishment in fundraising.

Knowledge

  • Business resource planning.
  • Word, Excel and PowerPoint or equivalent.
  • Fluent English (written, spoken).
  • Sport, Young People, and Social Enterprise policy.

Tenure:

  • An initial 2-year contract.

Location:

  • Flexible, but travel to operational regions is essential.

Compensation:

  • Up to £65k, dependent upon experience.
